The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), signed into law in 1994, was designed to ensure citizen soldiers who must leave their jobs to serve in the armed forces are not penalized for doing so. It stipulates that deployed soldiers who return to their jobs after service should be reemployed with the same position, status, and pay and prohibits discrimination in employment based on military service past or present.
