Influenza, or flu, is a viral disease affecting people, other mammals including pigs, and birds. Flu can be caused by many different, but related, viruses. Some flu viruses primarily infect people, while others infect mostly pigs (swine flus) or birds (avian flus).rnThough pigs routinely get swine flu viruses, they also are susceptible to the flu viruses that usually affect people and birds. When a pig is infected with more than one of these viruses, the viruses can change during replication so the resulting virus contains genetic parts of more than one virus. The recent human outbreak of swine flu is Influenza A, H1N1, and includes genetic components of human, swine, and avian viruses.
