As a reserve officer, I paid into the Survivor Benefit Plan [SBP) long before I began to collect retired pay. Why won't the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) credit me for those years? Many reserve officers have asked thatrnquestion since paid-up SBP was implemented Oct. 1, 2008. However, there is no provision to collect SBP premiums from guardmembers or reservists prior to the date they begin to collect retired pay. The counter for paid-up SBP begins the same date. Some retirees have confused Servicemembers' Croup Life Insurance premiums with SBP premiums.
