Significant Characteristics of the Urban Environment

The special considerations that must be taken into account in any operation in an urban environment go well beyond the uniqueness of the urban terrain. JP 3-06, Doctrine for Joint Urban Operations identifies three distinguishing characteristics of the urban environment: 1. Physical terrain, 2. Population, and 3. Infrastructure. Similarly, FM 3-06, Urban Operations, identifies three characteristics of the urban environment: 4. Terrain and weather, 5. Society, and 6. Infrastructure.
