In a surprise move during a visit to Russia in April 2003, Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri signed a contract for the delivery of two Su-27SKs, two Su-30MKs, and two Mi-35Ps; the two Su-27s arrived at Iswahjudi on August 27, followed by the two Su-30s on September 1; they were officially handed over on September 20, 2003, and in 2004 they replaced the last Skyhawks in TNI-AU service; these aircraft are reported to be largely unserviceable because the communications equipment is incompatible with Indonesian ground stations; plans for more orders were announced in March 2004, including two additional Su-30MKs and four (or six) Su-27SKs in 2004 and six Su-27SKs in 2005; total projected strength will therefore be 12 Su-27SKs and four Su-30MKs; negotiations for 12 more Su-27 type aircraft commenced in January 2005; of these, four aircraft were ordered in 2006 and delivered in 2008rnLockheed Martin F-16A/B: 7/3 Letter of Intent signed in August 1986 for eight F-16As and four F-16B trainers for $337 million; the first F-16 delivered in late 1989; one F-16 crashed at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in March 1997; at least six are considered non-operational because they lack spare parts, the result of a U.S. arms embargo placed in 1999; it is assumed thatrnthey could be returned to flight operations should spare parts become available.
