The armed forces form a single unified service, the Combined Guyana Defense Force, which consists of army (Ground Forces), navy (Coast Guard), and air force (Air Coips) elements. The president is commander-in-chief of the Combined Guyana Defense Force and minister of defense and national security.Guyana's total military force numbers 1,100 (Military Balance) or 2,000 (World Defence Almanac) personnel. Of the 189,456 available males in the 18-49 age bracket, 132,188 are classified as fit for military service with 8,842 reaching significant military age annually Recruitment is on a voluntary basis.
