The president is the commander in chief of the armed forces. Day-to-day decisions are made by the minister of defense. Since the outbreak of the rebellion in September 2002, accurate numbers regarding the size of the military have been hard to come by. Prior to the December 2010 elections, the Ivorian military's official name was the National Armed Forces of Ivory Coast, or FANCI. While dealing with the election aftermath in March 2011, President Alassane Ouattara renamed the military the Republican Forces of Ivory Coast, known by its French acronym FRCI. As of October 2011, sources reported that the Ivorian military forces would be renamed with their original name, FANCI, in an attempt to rebrand the national military and rid the force's negative image.
