The supreme commander of the Swedish Defense Forces has operational authority over the armed forces. He is assisted by a Defense Staff headed by a chief of staff. The supreme commander is subordinate to the Cabinet, which acts collectively but is generally represented by the minister of defense. The supreme commander serves a six-year term.
