The president is the commander in chief of the Austrian armed forces. The minister of defense exercises command and control and is advised by the chief of the defense staff. Subordinate to the minister and the Ministry of Defense military staff is the Joint Forces Command (based in Graz and Salzburg), which replaced several other commands (Land Forces, Air Force, International Missions, and Special Forces) in September 2006.
