The Danish armed forces total around 16,000 active personnel. There are also some 45,000 reserves. Conscription is based on a mostly voluntary lottery system and lasts for four months. The volunteer Home Guard (Hjemmevaernet), totaling 45,000 personnel, provides active support to the three service branches. The Danish defense forces are expected to deploy abroad as a contributor within NATO- and U.N.-led missions, defend and deter along the country's borders and territorial claims across the Arctic and High North areas, and support civilian authorities in national security operations.
