The president, who is also commander in chief of the armed forces, is the supreme military authority in Cameroon, but the defense minister makes routine decisions. The Army is deployed over three military regions, with one battalion assigned to each regional command. Other formations include six infantry battalions (one a training unit) and one each of the following battalions: Presidential Guard, airborne/commando, armored reconnaissance, and engineer. There is also one artillery battalion with five batteries, one anti-aircraft battalion with six batteries, and support units for the HQ regiments.
