The value of the special mission aircraft has become increasingly appreciated in recent years as defense planners throughout the world overhaul and fine-tune their threat analysis techniques. The special mission platforms range from the diminutive B-N Group Turbine Islander battlefield management aircraft to the still-on-the-drawing-board Northrop Grumman E-10A MC2A. The type of missions performed by these aircraft as well as their specific onboard systems will continue to evolve in order to meet both current and anticipated threats. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union and, more recently, the events of September 11, 2001, an increasing number of countries have had to shift their priorities from tracking unidentified submarines and force mobilization by their neighbors to issues of internal security, coastal surveillance, and drug interdiction.
