Army considers deploying missile that shoots down rockets and artillery

Lockheed Martin Corp. has developed hit-to-kill missile technology to destroy incoming rocket, artillery, and mortar rounds before they can do damage. The technology could be deployed with U.S. Army forces within the next five years. Army Contracting Command officials at Redstone Arsenal, Ala., announced a potential $46.5 million five-year contract in February to the Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control segment in Grand Prairie, Texas, to demonstrate Extended Area Protection and Survivability (EAPS) Integrated Demonstration (ID) technology, and begin moving it to an Army program of record.
