A significantly feasible high-gain cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna with wideband characteristics is investigated. A simple microstrip-fed slot coupling technique is adopted for excitation of the cylindrical resonator, which is placed over a square slot made at the centre of the ground plane. The upper side of the dielectric resonator is kept open for interference free radiation. To reduce the unnecessary back radiation, the bottom side of the ground plane substrate is covered by a single side copper coated dielectric reflector (1.35 × 1.35 × 0.04) at a small air-gap distance of 4 mm. This helps in abrupt gain enhancement of 101.48% over 17.14% impedance bandwidth. The effect of the reflector on bandwidth, gain and radiation pattern is studied. For validation purpose, a prototype is fabricated and characterised. The measured peak gains are found to be 10.84 and 10.45 dB while resonating at 7.3 and 8.08 GHz, respectively, which are in good agreement with their simulated counterparts.
