A few years ago, we proposed the name Atalanta for a new genus of Nassellaria (Radiolaria) found in Lower Jurassic strata of western Canada (Cordey and Carter, 1996). A recent investigation prompted us to recognize that this name was preoccupied and used by several authors. Meigen (1800) originally used the name Atalanta for a genus from the family Empididae (Diptera, Arthropoda) but the corresponding publication was cancelled by the I.C.Z.N. (see discussion in Sabrosky 1999). Next Rafinesque (1838) used Atalanta as a genus of flowering plants (Capparacea). Thereafter, Stal (1861) named a group belonging to the Hemiptera (Arthropoda), Seeley (1864) and Knocker (1869) a genus from the family Myophoridae (Mollusca). Therefore, we propose Atalantria as a replacement name for the preoccupied homonym Atalanta Cordey and Carter 1996. Atalantria is an arbitrary combination of letters (ICZN, 1999).
