Glencore buys Bolivian tin, zinc producer Comsur

Santiago, New York-Glencore International bought companies that held a 100 percent interest in Bolivia's Compania Minera del Sur, a producer of tin and zinc, the company said in a statement dated Feb 4. The Switzerland-based commodity trading house said it planned to make "immediate" investments in the country that would generate jobs and benefit the company's workers and Bolivia in general. The company added that it was committed to Bolivia and the development of its economy and to complying with Comsur's existing contracts. Comsur produces zinc concentrate from its Bolivar and Porco mines, while its joint venture (with UK investment group Actis) Compania Minera del Colquiri operates the Colquiri mine and Vinto smelter which produces about 11,000mt/year of refined tin. Glencore, a private company, did not reply to requests for details of the transaction.
