Tanzania’s gold revenues surge 14%

The nvalue of Tanzania’s gold exports surged 14% in the year nended-April 30 due to increased prices on the international nmarket, the Central Bank of Tanzania said last week. Ac-ncording to the bank, Tanzania exported gold worth $1.626 nbillion in the period. The central bank, however, did not indi-ncate the volume of gold exported in this period. The price of ngold on the international market increased to $1,321.17oz in the year to April, representing a 26.5% rise from a year nago, the bank report said. Tanzania is Africa’s third-largest ngold producer after Ghana and South Africa, and gold is the ncountry’s largest export revenue earner. Tanzania’s gold noutput rose 9% on year to hit 44.6 mt. Imports of goods nand services rose by 16% to $9.36 billion in the period from n$8.07 billion a year before, mostly due to a rise in oil prices non the world market. For the year ending in April, Tanzania’s nforeign exchange reserves rose 4.4% to hit $3.739 billion, nCentral Bank data indicates.
