For a project engineer, it was a dream come true, an opportunity to build a new 80,000 sq. ft. stamping facility from the foundation up. Walker Manufacturing's Elkhart, IN, new muffler plant was furnished with state-of-the-art system components—such as centralized scrap handling—to support the implementation of "imported" hy-droforming technology. After a quick-launch effort, the facility opened in mid 1996, and is now the central location for high-volume production of hydroformed exhaust components for both the OEM automotive industry and its af-termarket business. The plant supports four Walker facilities (three within 50 miles—Culver, Goshen and Ligonier, IN; plus one in Mexico).
