For many years, methylene chloride has been a mainstay in the aerospace industry as a means of rapidly and efficiently depainting aircraft. Although companies have been evaluating alternatives to methylene chloride in anticipation of the maximum achievable control technology (MACT) standard, the emission limit will prove to be one of the most difficult requirements to meet. This article presents a synopsis of the alternatives for aircraft depainting, and addresses industry acceptance, technical feasibility, and approximate costs.
