Accelerated corrosion testing has been used since the early 1900s as a means for evaluating the performance of coatings when exposure to actual conditions is neither practical nor available. An accelerated corrosion test is usually defined as any test method from which results are obtained in a shorter period of time than from natural exposure. More specifically, however, it commonly refers to a cabinet test method during which a specimen is exposed to a stress or combination of stresses for a given period of time. After exposure, the specimen is examined for rust, blisters, pitting, etc. Some commonly used tests include ASTM B 117 (salt spray), ASTM B 368 (CASS), ASTM D 2247 (100% humidity), and ASTM G85 (modified salt spray). Newer cyclic corrosion tests, such as GM9540P, CCT-Ⅳ, and SAE J2334 (pending), are gaining acceptance in the coatings market.
