Whether on the military or commercial side, the aviation industry is keenly aware of its responsibility and of the importance of its cargo—mainly people. While he acknowledges that Boeing has to abide by Federal Aviation Administration guidelines, "this is just something that makes good sense for us to do anyway—design for safe, durable airplanes." In order for Boeing to maintain its design and production certificates, it has to maintain some very stringent standards. "The products have to maintain structural integri- ty for the lifetime of the air-plane, and in this era that's at least 20 years, if not 25, he stresses.
