Ever thought about how you solve problems? Probably not. Solving problems relating to both technical and personnel areas can be done in a scientific manner. It shouldn't be done as a reflex action with no system or organization. This column will give better answers to the difficult and emotional problems faced by managers at all levels. The first step-define the problem: Often overlooked and extremely important is to define the problem. Personnel problems are usually the most difficult to define. For example, in the conflict between the production manager and the quality control (QC) manager, should the parts be shipped despite the QC rejection, or should the parts be put on hold for further review in-house by the customer?
