The overreliance of the chemical industry on petroleum-based raw materials has its foreseeable limits as fossil sources are depleting and are irreplaceable. It is not a matter of if, but when. Experts predict the end of cheap oil in 2040, at the latest. If the green chemists get it right, then the curve for the utilization of bio-feedstock (Figure 3) will have to rise such that it meets that of fossil raw materials somewhere around 2030-2040.
