The need for soil reclamation in the light of Polish and European soil quality standards - the case of polluted area surrounding copper smelters Glogow (SW Poland)

According to the Polish law, an area of 2200 ha in the vicinity of copper smelters Glogow, should be excluded from both agricultural and forest production, and soils in this area should be decontaminated in order to decrease the concentrations of heavy metals, in particular of Cu. This area remains smaller than that established as a zone of4th and 5th pollution level, defined in the IUNG guidelines (KABATA-PENDIAS et al., 1993). This area remains also much smaller (by ca. 30 percent) than that requiring reclamation according to Dutch Soil Protection Guidelines. If considering the soils polluted with Cu, the Polish standards of soil quality are in fact less restrictive than those defined by Dutch standards.
