Investigation of adsorption of aminofunctional silicone softener onto cotton fibers

The adsorption and desorption kinetics of aminosilicone TSF4708 (A) and its distribution were investigated on knitwear and terry cotton. The kinetic data as well as the distribution data were compared with those for the quat-ernized textile enhancer Magnasoft SilQ (Q). The adsorption of TSF4708 is a concentration dependent, kinetically controlled fast process. Within the first 200 s, 80% of the total amount of TSF4708 adsorbs on knitwear and terry cotton. EDX mapping and confocal Raman spectroscopy highlighted that high elemental silicon concentrations are found in a 2 μm thick layer on the fiber surface as well as in the fiber lumen. The desorption experiments in the presence of anionic detergents showed that under identical conditions, significantly more TSF4708 than Magnasoft SilQ is desorbed.
