Contagion and chaos: disease, ecology, and national security in the age of globalization

There are few images as dramatic as the television portrayals of massive epidemics and how citizens and governments respond. Breakdowns in civility, martial law, and unreserved violence are images that are portrayed as inevitable if an extremely virulent infective agent were found in civilian locations. Yet with this horrific picture, it has thankfully remained largely a matter of fiction.
