Morphological Variation in Nickel Sulfide Using Diversified Sulfur Sources and Its Magnetic Behavior

Three samples of nickel sulfide have been prepared by hydrothermal route using different sources of sulfur viz. thiourea, thioacetamide and sodium sulfide respectively by keeping ail the reaction condition identical. The effect of variable sulfur sources on phase and morphology of the synthesized products was investigated. The synthesized products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (FESEM), UV-Vis. photoluminescence (PL) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The FESEM images show different hierarchical nanostructured morphologies with spheres, broccoli and flower like patterns with thiourea, thioacetamide and sodium sulfide respectively. The nickel sulfides obtained by different sulfur sources have relatively high surface area, which favors its application in catalysis. Unlike the bulk nickel sulfides which are antiferromagnetic the as-prepared nickel sulfides nanostructures shows weak ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature.
