Nanostructured cathodes materials have been playing a major role in the development of alternative clean and sustainable energy technologies. There exist several review articles dealing with different sections of lithium ion batteries (LIBs), such as the anode, the cathode, electrolytes and electrode-electrolyte interface etc. As evident from the tremendous amount of current research work carried out in these areas, cathodes materials are considered to be crucial components have an effect on the performance of LIBs. This review article summarizes the recent research progress on the olivine and integrated (both spinel and layered oxide) cathode materials and its application in lithium ion battery based energy storage devices. First, an introduction on the properties, synthesis strategies and use of cathode materials are briefly given, followed by a state-of-the-art review on their electrochemical properties in lithium ion battery (LIB) applications. The details are presented herein. We believe the review paper will provide an update for the reader regarding recent progress on nanostructured cathodes materials for LIBs.
