It gives me great pleasure to introduce this special issue on the Americas. I have been the North American Adviser since the restructuring of the Maritime Policy and Management (MPM) editorial board in 1996. I thought that writing this editorial would be a difficult task because MPM traditionally does not get large numbers of manuscripts from North America, and, in Canada, there has not been strong support for academic programs in the maritime field. The fine authors represented in this issue reflect most of the critical issues facing the hemisphere in the first decade of the new millennium.
