Data and telephony communication and internet services to and from seagoing vessels has been costly, inflexible and limited to expensive satellite systems or the use of roaming mobile phones. These limited methods of communication mostly are also only available at a few locations, such as the bridge, the captain's or ship's office and thus not accessible to everyone on board. Nevertheless, effective communication becomes ever more important for the vessel's operation and management as well as for the crew and passengers satisfaction.
