On 25 January 2010, Paul Rembach (U.S.) from Thrustmaster was invited to the head office of Damen Shipyards in Gorinchem to present Thrustmaster's Hybrid Electric Vessel concept. Many project managers and design engineers attended the presentation with great interest. Thrustmaster of Texas is one of the few companies which can deliver a complete tried and tested hybrid propulsion solution "off the shelf". Their set-up consists of a diesel-electric propulsion installation with a DC ring bus and lead-acid batteries banks for stored energy. All attendees agreed that for specific cases, a hybrid propulsion installation can result in considerable fuel savings. Several of the Damen Shipyards engineers and naval architects were involved with the E3 Eco tug, a joint project between Smit, Damen and Alewijnse. A hybrid propulsion installation is particularly promising for tugs, as these vessels alternate between short high-power bursts (on diesels and battery power) and long periods of loitering (on battery power only).
