Van Oord has ordered a new subsea rock installation vessel as announced in September 2014. Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group Shanghai will build the vessel at its Ningbo yard in China with delivery planned for 2016. Subsea rock installation is a technique for the protection and stabilisation of offshore structures and pipelines. The vessel, with a DP-3 dynamic positioning system, can install a wide range of rock sizes. With a deadweight of 14,000 tons, a length of 154 metres and a beam of 28 metres and space to accommodate 60 people, the vessel can operate in water depths over 600 metres. Special attention was paid during the design phase to the energy efficiency of the bow and hull.
