Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI): Advanced Research Tools for the Ocean Sciences

The U.S. National Science Foun-dation (NSF) is building a network of oceanic research observatories designed to launch an era of scientific discovery across and within the ocean basins, using widely accessible, scal-able, interactive telepresence. The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) design is driven by the need for better tools to investigate, to examine, and to assess many basic physical ocean pro-cesses that directly impact human soci-ety, our climate, and the incredible range of natural phenomena found in the largest ecosystem of the planet.
