Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and selected pesti- cides such as DDT, hexachlorobenzene, chlordane, dieldrin and mirex are classified as persistent organic pollutants (Loganathan and Kannan, 1991; Vallack et al., 1998). Estuaries and the coastal marine environment are considered the most sensitive areas to the accumu- lation of these compounds (Sericano et al., 1990).
