Marine pollution bulletin special issue - 5th international conference on marine pollution and ecotoxicology

In 1994, the Department of Biology and Chemistry of the City University of Hong Kong embarked on an ambitious mission - to organize an international conference on marine pollution and ecotoxicology, attracting marine pollution experts from around the globe to share their experiences, and to explore the feasibility of using this forefront knowledge and the related developing technologies to solve some of the pressing marine pollution problems in Hong Kong. The immediate success of this first meeting, held in 1995, subsequently triggered three further meetings - in 1998, 2001 and 2004, followed by the 5th conference, which was held in Hong Kong in June, 2007. This series of conferences has emerged not only as a signature event for City University, but also for our international scientific community, as exemplified by the participation of more than 250 marine environmental scientists from 30 countries at the last meeting. This special issue of Marine Pollution Bulletin contains selected papers presented at the 5th Conference, following the normal stringent scientific review processes set by the journal.
