Scottish marine biological station closes

The closure of the University of London's research and teaching facil-ity on the Scottish Island of Cumbrae, Firth of Clyde, has been announced by the Trustees of the University of London. The Universities Marine Bio-logical Station Millport (UMBSM) is to close at the end of 2013. The decision to shut the facility was taken following a review of its funding by HEFCE (the Higher Education Funding Council for England). HEFCE is withdrawing its grant to the Station, and the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) has also indicated that it will no longer fund UMBSM.
