With today's rising fuel costs, most ship owners and managers are very interested in what speed their ships can achieve and the correspondingly precise fuel consumption. Furthermore, they would like to know if improvements (higher fuel efficiency and/or higher service speeds) can be attained. Most shipowners make an attempt to monitor the performance, either by use of special equipment or by manual collection and analysis of operational data, such as "noon data."
