MaK M43 completes 30,000 hour overhaul

After five years in service in the North and Baltic Seas, the first MaK M43 diesel in commercial service recently successfully completed its 30,000 hour overhaul. The results justify the confidence shown by shipowner Heinz Ehler of Otterndorf (near Hamburg) when he had the container feeder Anke Ehler—the first ship of the Sietas 160A Type— equipped with the then brand new 8 M43. The ship's commissioning in April 2000 marked the commercial debut of the MaK M43, the fourth type of the new MaK generation of engines consisting of the M20, M25, M32 and M43. The 658 TEU Anke Ehler is also equipped with two Cat 3412 auxiliary diesels and a Cat 3304 emergency diesel. MaK Deutschland service director Andreas Sikorski sums up the results of the 30,000 hour inspection: "Satisfactory seals, intact valves, piston rings in order, bearings without cavitation phenomena and stable running patterns on rollers and cams." The findings follow similarly positive intermediate results from numerous 15,000 operating hour checks.
