How big will containerships get in the next few years? Germanisch-er Lloyd and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) have come up with an answer. Last month, D.S. Cho, HHI's executive vice president, and Jan-Olaf Probst, ship type manager for Container Ships at Germanischer Lloyd presented an innovative design for a 13,000 TEU containership. All the relevant calculations have been carried out and the design is completely approved by Germanischer Lloyd. HHI is now accepting orders. Construction time would be nine to 10 months, but the yard's current order backlog means that the earliest delivery would be 2009.
