A global standard for the environmentally safe recycling of ships is years away. Last month, IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) considered the draft text of the International Convention for the Safe an Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships as part of a very busy agenda. The hope is that the draft convention can be completed and finalized so that it can be considered for adoption by a diplomatic conference by April 2009.
