Marine journalist Alan Haig-Brown was on hand at Intracoastal Iron Works in Bourg, La., when the shipyard was installing new Tier 2 compliant engines into an inland river push-boat. Haig-Brown took a series of photos of the installation process, including the one above and on this month's cover. While Intracoastal Iron Works' Joey Portier has performed countless engine installations, this one was a bit different. Last December, a client for one of Intracoastal Iron Works' standard 72 ft × 30 ft pushboats specified the QSK38 for a boat under construction. While the Tier 2 compliant QSK38 engines share the same block dimensions as the mechanical KTA38 diesels, some of its accessories have increased the exterior dimensions and its overall weight.
