CONSOLIDATED STEEL CORPORATION

Consolidated Steel Corporation was formed in 1929 from the amalgamation of Llewellyn Iron Works, Baker Iron Works and Union Iron Works. It started its shipbuilding activity in 1938 by leasing the shipyard in Long Beach which was the former Craig Shipbuilding. However, because this site was not big enough, they built an entirely new shipyard in the Wilmington district of Los Angeles and devoted the Long Beach shipyard to repair and conversion. This new yard was built in the second wave of shipbuilding expansion, with $13 million invested by the U.S. Maritime Commission, and initially had four ways, but four more were subsequently added.
