SHIPBUILDING IN NOVA SCOTIA TWO VERY DIFFERENT SMALL SHIPBUILDERS

Shipbuilding has always been an important industry throughout Nova Scotia, indeed, throughout Canada's Atlantic Provinces. Two longestablished but very different small shipbuilders, in two historic but very different small towns, illustrate the industry's significance. Pictou is a small town on the north shore of Nova Scotia, across the Northumberland Strait from Prince Edward Island. It was settled during the Highland Clearances of the late eighteenth century. These Scottish immigrants built their first ship in Pictou in 1788 and there was shipbuilding in Pictou for the next 200 years.
