Scrubbing out your SOx

Sulfur dioxide, a by-product of burning fossil fuel, can be deadly. In higher concentrations-measured in parts per billion-it can cause breathing problems, lung and heart disease, respiratory issues such as asthma and other health issues. The North American Emissions Control Area (ECA) is all about knocking out the SOx produced from burning heavy fuel oil on ships. Once a ship enters the ECA, it has to burn more expensive ultra low sulfur fuel to comply. Another option is to burn heavy fuel oil and use an exhaust gas cleaning system or scrubber to wash out the SOx from your engine and boilers.
