Industry teams led by General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works; Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems ― Surface Systems; and Raytheon Company, Integrated Defense Systems; have been awarded contracts for the next stage of the US Navy's Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) programme, the preliminary design phase. Each industry team will perform a seven-month preliminary design effort to refine its proposal for LCS, the high-speed ship designed for operation in littoral or coastal areas that is expected to feature an advanced hull-form, shallow draught and the ability to transit quickly at speeds of 40-50kts.
