In 2004 newbuild deliveries are forecast to reach 60Mt, rivalling the peaks of the 1970s, and marking shipbuilding as one of the fastest growing heavy industry sectors in the world today. The 21st SMM exhibition to be held from 28 September to 2 October is also anticipating record attendances, with the participation of over 1400 companies from more than 50 different nations already confirmed. In order to keep the emphasis squarely on technology and equipment manufacturers conference organisers have decided to pull the plug on the partner country concept that has been a mainstay of SMM exhibitions in the past.
