Step changes in engine output over the years has meant that both mean effective pressure (MEP) and maximum cylinder pressures have risen in proportion. In the late 1980s/early 1990s MEP was around 15-16 bar and maximum firing pressures were approximately 130 bar; today pressures for the latest generation of two-stroke crosshead engines are 18-20 bar MEP, with maximum cylinder pressures as high as 155 bar.
