INSIDE INFORMATION: OVERHAUL OF BILGE AND GENERAL SERVICE PUMP

On an Unattended Machinery Space (UMS) inspection of the engine room, it was noticed that the mechanical seal of the bilge and general service (GS) pump was leaking seawa-ter. The leaking seal was serious enough that the pump had to be shut down and isolated. Access to the pump was fairly good, however after removing the pump casing the rotating element would have to be removed. The rotating element being heavy and requiring several parts to slide together at the same time would be very difficult to replace by hand alone.
