MONITORS IN WORLD WAR 2

During World War 1 around 40 monitors were operational in the Royal Navy, many in the English Channel, but soon after the end of the War most, like Clive and Wolfe, were withdrawn and then scrapped. Certainly the days of the 'super large gun' monitor were over, but two vessels with twin 15in guns actually survived to see service in World War 2. HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, each with a displacement of 8000t, were both launched in 1915 and of slightly more modern appearance than Clive or Wolfe.
