Operators, and particularly engine manufacturers, must anticipate these challenges with advancements in fuel quality testing, engine technology and maintenance practices to provide the most reliable and efficient sources of power for main propulsion and auxiliary power. Engine manufacturers must be prepared to design and develop products that can operate on a wide range of fuels from heavy fuel oil to low sulfur MDO. We must also ensure that operating procedures for switching between different types of fuels are optimised to prevent detrimental impacts to fuel system and other engine components as well as ancillary fuel management equipment.
